Proposal to Change the Club Name – Approved at the AGM
Since its foundation in 1994, the Sunshine Coast Bicycle Touring Club has grown and evolved, much like the vibrant cycling community it serves. Originally formed as a hub for recreational, touring, and commuting cyclists, our club has stayed true to its roots while adapting to the changing interests and demographics of local riders.
Over the past 30 years, our membership has expanded to include riders of all levels and abilities, with weekly rides spanning a range of distances and styles—not just touring. Yet, despite our inclusivity, feedback from prospective members has highlighted a recurring theme: the current club name can give the impression that we are only for tourers, discouraging wider participation.
To ensure our club continues to grow and thrive into the future, the Committee considered a new name—one that better reflects the diverse riding we offer and makes it easier for people to find and identify with us.
After thoughtful deliberation, the Committee proposed the following new names at the 2025 AGM: The proposal was accepted by over 75% of members at the AGM.
- Sunshine Coast Bicycle Club Inc. (just drop the word touring)
- Bicycle Sunshine Coast Club Inc.
These options have been selected because they are clear, inclusive, and easily searchable online. Importantly, they are not currently in use by other organisations, ensuring a strong and unique identity for our club.
Next Steps
As an incorporated association, any official name change must be approved at a general meeting. A formal proposal was approved at our Annual General Meeting, where members were asked to vote on adopting one of the names listed above or to keep our existing name.
We are waiting for approval by the Office of Fair Trading, The club will then move forward with the rebranding process.
Member Benefits
To mark this new chapter, the Committee is planning to offer new club riding gear at heavily discounted prices, along with other branded merchandise at no cost to members.
We believe this change represents an exciting opportunity to refresh our image, grow our membership, and continue building a welcoming and dynamic cycling community.
